This past week, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Barcelona! As I had never been to Barcelona before, I started to learn about the city and what it has to offer. I learned very quickly that near the top of my must-see places to go was La Pedrera. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit it for myself!
Located on the beautiful Passeig de Gracia, just a block or so away from where I was staying, La Pedrera is one of the many famous works of Antoni Gaudi that are found in this beautiful city.
My first night in Barcelona, I saw it lit up as I was walking to dinner. It is breathtaking!
Immediately, you can see why this building stands out. Gaudi’s designs all stand out and contribute to the magnificence of the city.
It’s highly recommended when visiting La Pedrera to get tickets in advance, as it is a very popular attraction and lines form quickly. By purchasing tickets ahead of time, you can bypass the queue.
La Pedrera (also known as Casa Mila) was commissioned of Gaudi by Pere Mila and his wife to be their residence. Their intention was to live on the main floor and to use the remaining space to be an apartment building. It is loaded with symbolism and was very controversial due to the unconventional materials and aesthetics. Upon entering, you can see this is not an ordinary apartment building. Every detail of this building is unique, with a strong representation of nature in the structure. The design is very complex and over the years the building experienced dilapidation, deterioration, and multiple changes of ownership. Towards the latter part of the last century, it was acquired and restored to its original nature of the early 1900’s, giving the public the opportunity to see the grandeur for themselves.
We were taken to the top of the building via an elevator where we could see the view of the city, as well as the extraordinary structures Gaudi put on the top of the rooftop terrace. Chimneys and skylights adorn the roof. The elements and spiritual aspects are represented and make for a remarkable sight.
Lovers of art and architecture, and even those that know nothing about either subject, will thoroughly enjoy a visit to La Pedrera as it is spectacular to see.
You can visit an apartment within furnished with unique pieces of furniture to see the extravagance of living in such a space, visit the attic, the rooftop, and see the courtyard. There are some spaces that are off limits due to current occupied residences and offices, however, you can see a large amount of the building when visiting.
Visiting La Pedrera was well worth our time and is something I would highly recommend to gain an understanding of Antoni Gaudi’s work and an appreciation of modernism in Barcelona.
