While in New Jersey last week, we went to see The Illusionists, so optical illusions, tricks and unnerving acts were fresh in our minds when we found ourselves in New York City. We decided that one of the shows we would see was Mind Mangler, a new show to America straight from a sold out run in the West End of London.

Similar to The Illusionists, we found ourselves in a performance of mind-blowing experiences and feats…..with a twist. Imagine if that kind of show went all wrong. In this hysterical two-person show, we find a flailing magician performing his act for an audience (us) where anything and everything goes awry.
The Mind Mangler is performed by two members of the team that wrote it– Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer. With Henry Shields, Lewis and Sayer have written several very popular shows, such as The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan Goes Wrong, as well as others. Having seen The Play That Goes Wrong, I can see how the quick-witted banter and physical comedy is a common thread in these shows and is an absolute blast to witness in person.
British humor is my favorite kind of humor and this show is loaded with it. The chemistry between Lewis and Sayer is fantastic and whether they are speaking scripted parts or improv (which is very often), the dialogue is rich with comedy. In fact, I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time!

Audience participation is abundant and it’s fascinating to watch Lewis and Sayer run with the elements of a show that can not be controlled and make it such a lively and entertaining experience. I would love to see this show over and over again to see how each audience would change the hilarity of the evening.
The show is fast-paced and so much fun. If you are in the New York City area or visiting anytime soon, you must get tickets to see it, you will be so glad you did. We had a wonderful time and I highly recommend this show to you!
