Silent Sky

Do you love local theater? Then you should pick up tickets to see Silent Sky at the Brinton Black Box Theater presented by Covey Center Theater for the Arts.

Located in the upstairs area of the center, this gem of a theater houses smaller productions, ensuring a very intimate experience for each theatergoer. I had never experienced this theater before, so it was fun to attend a performance of Silent Sky this week.

This production of Silent Sky written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by David Morgan, tells the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. A scientist at heart, Henrietta rejects the traditional expectations of the time for women and is invited to work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s. Revolutionary in a time when women’s ideas were not valued, she pushes the boundaries as she works on her own astronomical discoveries only to encounter resistance. The show reflects on the societal norms of the time and delves into the inequity during a time of progressive discoveries. Ultimately, the story is one of love, friendship and discovery.

This production in Provo showcased local Utah talent. Audiences could see and feel the dedication all five actors put into their performances. Rachel Ryan Nicholes, Christie Gardiner, Jordan Nicholes, Annadee Morgan, and Alexis Boss made up the entire cast and carried us as we heard this tale that was dying to be told, sharing the perspective of real women and their accomplishments that have changed the way the entire world looks at their place in the universe.

Silent Sky is playing now through March 4th, 2024 in Provo, Utah. If you would love to see something special, you’ll be sure to want to see it live on stage. You can learn more about the production and purchase tickets by visiting Covey Center for the Arts online.
