I’ve had the privilege to see hundreds of performances on stages around the world. I love being transported to another realm and listening to a story unfold. I love connecting to characters and enjoying music. The theater is one of my very favorite ways to spend my time. Last night, we were invited to see Message In A Bottle’s opening performance at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and I was excited for the opportunity.
We arrived to the theater not quite knowing what to expect. I had heard this show was a little different, but I had no idea what was in store for us. I knew that this relatively new show featured songs from Sting, so I figured we would be good to go. I didn’t research the show at all before, as I wanted it to be a surprise.

We found our seats and waited for the show to begin. Being at the Denver Center for Performing Arts is always a treat, we knew that the venue would be a wonderful stage to see this show for the first time.

The opening scene began and it was electrifying. If I had to give you an idea of what it was like, Google the opening scenes of Xanadu when “I’m Alive” is playing and the Muses come alive. Now mix that with Janet Jackson’s “Together Again” music video and you will get a sense of the vibe. It was completely unlike anything I had seen on stage before. We knew we were in for something special instantly.
We found ourselves in the peaceful village of Bebko, which was alive with joyous celebrations. Suddenly, under attack, everything changes forever. Three siblings, Leto, Mati and Tana, must embark on perilous journeys in order to survive.
Through interpretive dance and 28 interwoven songs from 17-time Grammy Award-winning artist Sting, we find ourselves, as the audience, taking the journey with the family as they experience highs and lows; joy, tragedy, despair, and triumph. Yet, it’s all through movement and dance that we learn their stories. There is no dialogue, no traditional Broadway singing, just a troupe of highly athletic and talented dancers that make us feel every little emotion using their bodies and by watching their facial expressions. I have never experienced a show such as this.

I might even add that I’ve never been a fan of watching dancing. Had I known before I left to see the show that there was only dancing to convey the stories, I might even have reconsidered seeing it. What a shame that would have been! I would have missed out on something absolutely incredible. The performance we saw last night has forever changed my view of what dance can and should be.
I loved the seamless storytelling through almost acrobatic movements, color, costumes and lighting. The emotions portrayed on stage were palpable and quite encompassing. At one point, I even found myself moved to tears, as did the rest of the audience. The energy and intensity was contagious and was buzzing throughout the theater.

The talents of Kate Prince, the ground-breaking choreographer behind Message In A Bottle were evident. I couldn’t believe I could feel so much through dance. The performers of ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company were absolutely to be applauded. These hard working dancers gave it their all and made it seem gracefully effortless. They were spectacular.
Message In A Bottle is not to be missed. This is a wonderful portrayal of humanity and hope and well worth your time to see it for yourselves. Message In A Bottle is on stages at the Denver Center for Performing Arts now through February 25, 2024.
