Seeing Jersey Boys at Pioneer Theatre Company was an unforgettable experience, and the timing couldn’t have been better. I’ve always had a soft spot for this musical because of its roots in New Jersey, the home state of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons—and my own. Growing up with stories of Jersey’s blue-collar resilience, I felt an instant connection to the rise of these local boys who became international superstars. Seeing their story come to life, far from the Garden State, yet still so vibrantly, was both nostalgic and electrifying.

This production, running from September 13-28, 2024, at the Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre, marked my first visit to this iconic venue in Salt Lake City. As someone accustomed to the hustle of New York City theaters, I didn’t know what to expect, but Pioneer Theatre Company immediately impressed me with its intimacy, attention to detail, and professional polish. The theater’s cozy design made every seat feel close to the action, pulling the audience right into the drama and music.

The cast, led by Trevor James as Frankie Valli, was extraordinary. His portrayal of Valli, particularly his falsetto in hits like “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” was spot on, evoking the raw passion that made these songs timeless. The ensemble, featuring veterans like Daxton Bloomquist and Adam Enrique Hollick, perfectly captured the unique personalities of the Four Seasons members, each bringing their own perspective to the group’s meteoric rise and inevitable struggles. I was particularly struck by how the story gave each character a voice, weaving their personal tales into the broader narrative of fame, fortune, and heartache.

Karen Azenberg, the director and choreographer, brought the production to life with a vibrant energy. Her careful attention to movement and pacing kept the audience engaged throughout the nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime. From the sharp choreography to the seamless scene transitions, every moment was crafted with precision.
For anyone in Salt Lake City, this is a must-see production. I think everyone should see Jersey Boys, it’s a favorite, and it’s impossible not to get caught up in the magic of this show. The music is infectious, the performances are top-notch, and the story reminds us that no dream is too big, no matter where you’re from.
