Thanksgiving weekend is more than turkey and pumpkin pie—it’s the perfect time to start the holiday season with a touch of magic. This year, step into a world of wonder with The Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s The Nutcracker at the Pikes Peak Center, running November 29–December 1, 2024.
Performed in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma’s renowned Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts School of Dance, this production brings Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet to life in a way that fills hearts with the spirit of the season. Whether it’s your first time or your family’s cherished tradition, this is a Nutcracker you won’t want to miss.

The Philharmonic’s live performance of Tchaikovsky’s iconic score provides the perfect backdrop as the University of Oklahoma’s School of Dance transports audiences to Clara’s magical world. Imagine the grandeur of the Land of Sweets and the delicate beauty of the Snowflake Waltz, every moment will be a feast for the senses.
But there’s more to this collaboration than meets the eye. The University of Oklahoma’s School of Dance, founded in 1961 by Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo principals Miguel Terekhov and Yvonne Chouteau, has a rich history of excellence. Originally formed to “teach a few classes,” it quickly blossomed into one of the nation’s premier dance programs. In 1976, Kozaburo Yukihiro helped establish the school’s Bachelor of Fine Arts curriculum, and by 1998, it had risen to national prominence as a full-fledged School of Dance under Mary Margaret Holt. Today, their two performing companies, Oklahoma Festival Ballet and Contemporary Dance Oklahoma, are celebrated for their professionalism and artistry.
It’s this legacy of excellence that makes their partnership with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic so special. The result is sure to be a performance that combines the beauty of classical ballet with the raw power of live orchestral music, creating an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
I know how hard it can be to find holiday activities that feel meaningful and magical. The Nutcracker checks every box. It’s family-friendly, awe-inspiring, and steeped in tradition—everything you want for your kids (and let’s be honest, for yourself). Watching your children’s faces light up as they’re whisked away to a world of dancing sugar plums and toy soldiers is pure joy.
The Pikes Peak Center makes it easy to enjoy. With three performances over Thanksgiving weekend, there’s a showtime that works for every schedule. Recover from Black Friday shopping or go for a festive way to end your holiday weekend, The Nutcracker is the perfect choice.
