There’s something undeniably magical about stepping back in time during the holidays—slowing the pace of our busy lives and immersing ourselves in the kind of Christmas our ancestors might have cherished. This year, my family and I discovered that magic at Candlelight Christmas at This is the Place Heritage Park, and I can’t wait to share the experience with you!

The moment we arrived, it was as if the stress of holiday shopping lists and modern-day chaos melted away. The charming village, nestled in the shadow of Utah’s majestic mountains, was aglow with twinkling lights. The historic buildings, lovingly decorated with evergreen garlands, red ribbons, and soft candlelight, set the perfect scene for a quiet and meaningful evening.
What makes Candlelight Christmas so special is how it allows families to connect with traditions of the past. From the warm glow of lanterns lighting the pathways to the cheerful carolers serenading us with classic tunes, every detail feels like a page from a storybook. Little kids were fascinated by the blacksmith shop and the pioneer cabins, marveling at how families once celebrated with handmade gifts, simple decorations, and heartfelt joy.

Each building offered a unique activity or glimpse into history. We printed newspapers in one shop, and in another, we learned about the art of weaving. There’s even a live Nativity scene, reminding us of the true reason for the season. It was heartwarming to see families engage with these hands-on experiences, their faces lit up with curiosity and wonder.
Of course, no Christmas outing is complete without indulging in some festive treats, and Candlelight Christmas did not disappoint! One of our favorite stops was Brigham’s Donuts, where we devoured warm, sugary donuts that tasted like pure happiness. Pair that with a cup of creamy hot chocolate from the Huntsman Hotel, and it’s a match made in holiday heaven.
What I appreciated most about Candlelight Christmas was the chance to slow down and truly enjoy time together as a family. In a season that’s often packed with parties, shopping trips, and endless to-do lists, this evening was a breath of fresh air. There were no screens, no distractions—just simple joys like singing along to carolers, seeing how the pioneers lived, and watching little kids’ eyes sparkle as they took it all in.
We ended the night gathered around the crackling bonfire and sharing our favorite moments. It’s the kind of evening where time seemed to stand still.
If you’re looking for a way to recapture the joy and simplicity of the season, Candlelight Christmas is a must. It’s a chance to reconnect with your loved ones, create lasting memories, and celebrate in a setting that feels straight out of a Hallmark movie.
This Christmas, slow the pace, embrace the charm of the past, and enjoy a magical night with your family at Candlelight Christmas. The event runs through December 23rd, so there’s still time to plan your visit. Bundle up (it can get chilly!), bring your appetite for donuts and cocoa, and prepare for an unforgettable evening that reminds us all of what truly matters during the holidays.
