If you’re looking for a family-friendly outing this holiday season that will leave everyone smiling, laughing, and maybe even singing along, look no further than Shrek the Musical playing now through December 29, 2024, a Live at the Eccles production visiting Salt Lake City. This vibrant production breathes fresh life into the beloved DreamWorks tale and is the perfect way to enjoy some quality time during Christmas break.
For those who might not be familiar with the story (are there any of you left?!), Shrek the Musical follows the same lovable green ogre (originally voiced by Mike Myers in the movie) as he sets off on an unexpected adventure. Shrek, content with his swampy solitude, finds his life turned upside down when a band of fairytale misfits invades his home. To reclaim his peace, Shrek strikes a deal with the hilariously dramatic Lord Farquaad: rescue Princess Fiona from her dragon-guarded tower, and the swamp is his again. Along the way, Shrek reluctantly befriends the ever-enthusiastic Donkey, discovers Fiona’s surprising secrets, and learns that even ogres are worthy of love and friendship.

The musical follows the movie’s storyline fairly closely but enhances it with toe-tapping songs, charming choreography, and clever humor that brings fresh energy to the tale. Even though I’d seen Shrek the Musical many years ago, this production felt like a different experience. The creative team pulled out all the stops to make the show visually appealing. Puppets were seamlessly woven into the story and the imaginative costumes brought our favorite fairy tale creatures to life in ways that were both whimsical and modern.
I appreciated Fiona’s backstory that added depth and dimension to her character. Fiona’s heartfelt solo about her life in the tower, “I Know It’s Today,” was sweet, while Shrek’s introspective “Who I’d Be” reminded us that this green ogre has a soft heart under all those layers. The humor was not lost on the Salt Lake City crowd, with Lord Farquaad’s scenes earning some of the loudest laughs of the night. (Let’s just say his “shortcomings” are played up to maximum comedic effect!)

The production also delivers on the magic of theater—there’s a live energy that can’t be replicated on screen. The cast’s enthusiasm was palpable, and the songs had a way of pulling the audience right into the story. By the time the finale, “I’m a Believer,” rolled around, the whole theater felt like a giant, joyous party. I feel this is a great show to introduce new theater-goers to, especially children, getting them excited for what can unfold onstage.
What makes Shrek the Musical such a great family outing is that it truly has something for everyone. Kids will adore the silly humor and larger-than-life characters, while parents will appreciate the witty dialogue and the underlying message about self-acceptance and celebrating differences. Plus, with the holidays upon us, it’s a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle for a couple of hours and immerse yourself in a story that reminds us all of the importance of love, friendship, and a little bit of magic.
The Eccles venue itself adds to the experience with its cozy yet grand atmosphere, ensuring that every seat feels like a good one. I recommend arriving a little early to take in the festive vibe—Salt Lake City always knows how to make the holiday season feel extra special, and this production is no exception.
So, while you can, grab your kids, your parents, or even just your inner child, and head the Eccles Theater for Shrek the Musical. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Don’t wait too long—the show’s run ends on December 29, and you won’t want to miss this enchanting Christmas break adventure!
