Stepping into the Buell Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, I was immediately enveloped by the buzz of anticipation. The iconic story of “Mean Girls,” reimagined as a musical, had arrived in Denver, and I was eager to see how this cult classic translated to the stage.
“Mean Girls” the musical, with a book by Tina Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, brings a fresh energy to the familiar tale. The story follows Cady Heron, a teenager who transitions from being homeschooled in Africa to navigating the treacherous waters of an American high school. There, she encounters “The Plastics,” a trio of popular girls led by the formidable Regina George. As Cady attempts to find her place, she becomes entangled in a web of high school politics, peer pressure, and self-discovery.

From the moment the curtain rose, the production dazzled with vibrant sets and dynamic choreography. The musical numbers were both catchy and poignant, capturing the essence of teenage angst and the desire to belong. Standout performances included the humorous “Apex Predator,” highlighting the predatory nature of high school cliques, and the empowering “I’d Rather Be Me,” which drew cheers from the audience.

The cast delivered stellar performances, with the actress portraying Regina George exuding charisma and menace in equal measure. Cady’s journey from innocence to a scheming “Plastic” and back to self-awareness was portrayed with depth and authenticity. The supporting characters, including the hilarious duo of Janis and Damian, provided comic relief while also delivering heartfelt moments.

Attending “Mean Girls” at the Buell Theater was such a fun experience. The energy of the live audience, the electric atmosphere, and the seamless production elements combined to create a memorable evening. The show’s themes of friendship, identity, and the pitfalls of popularity resonated deeply, offering both entertainment and reflection.
“Mean Girls” is playing at the Buell Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts now through March 2, 2025.
