After a day of pounding the pavement in Seattle, our feet aching but our spirits high, we sought a spot to unwind and soak in the city’s beauty. Enter the Smith Tower—a beacon of history and elegance amidst the modern skyline. Little did we know, this iconic structure would offer not just a visual feast but a culinary delight that would etch itself into our travel memories.

Standing tall since 1914, the Smith Tower holds the title of Seattle’s original skyscraper. At 159 meters, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi upon its completion. Its white terra cotta façade and neoclassical design exude a timeless charm, a stark yet harmonious contrast to the glass giants that surround it today. 

The journey to the top is an experience in itself. We stepped into one of the last remaining manually operated elevators, a vintage gem that whisked us up 35 floors. As the doors opened, we were greeted by the Observatory—a space that marries historical ambiance with modern comfort. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak times like sunset, ensuring you have a coveted spot to witness the day’s end.

Settling into our table, we were immediately captivated by the panoramic views. The sun began its descent, casting a golden hue over the city and the shimmering waters of Puget Sound. The Olympic Mountains stood majestically in the distance, their silhouettes gradually blending into the evening sky. After a day of urban exploration, this serene setting felt like a well-deserved reward.

The Observatory’s menu spoke to Seattle’s rich tapestry of flavors, with a distinct Asian influence that pays homage to the city’s cultural diversity. Our choices for the evening:

• Pacific Northwest Salmon Teriyaki Bowl: The salmon, sourced locally, was grilled to perfection—its exterior slightly crisp, giving way to a moist and flaky interior. The teriyaki glaze struck a harmonious balance between sweet and savory, complementing the natural richness of the fish. Served atop a bed of sticky rice and accompanied by seaweed and edamame salad and pickled ginger, each bite was a delightful medley of textures and flavors.

• Char Siu Pork Banh Mi: This Vietnamese-inspired sandwich was a revelation. The baguette, with its crisp crust and soft interior, cradled succulent slices of char siu pork. The meat’s subtle sweetness was elevated by pickled radish and cucumbers, fresh cilantro, and a hint of spicy aioli. Each mouthful offered a symphony of contrasts—crunchy and tender, spicy and sweet.

Those around us sipped on craft cocktails inspired by Prohibition-era recipes, each with a modern twist, further enhancing the timeless feel of the evening.
