Attending the recent production of Annie at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts in Colorado Springs was a delightful experience for our family. This timeless musical, which has captivated audiences since its Broadway debut in 1977, continues to resonate with its themes of hope and resilience.
Annie tells the story of a spirited young orphan in Depression-era New York City. Living under the harsh supervision of Miss Hannigan, Annie’s life takes a turn when she’s chosen to spend the holidays with the wealthy Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. Her unwavering optimism not only transforms her own fate but also warms the hearts of those around her. The musical features beloved songs like “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” which have become classics over the decades.
The cast at the Pikes Peak Center delivered outstanding performances. Hazel Vogel portrayed Annie with a perfect blend of innocence and determination, capturing the audience’s hearts from the start. Christopher Swan’s portrayal of Daddy Warbucks was both commanding and tender, illustrating the character’s evolution beautifully. Stefanie Londino brought a delightful mix of humor and villainy to the role of Miss Hannigan, making her a memorable antagonist. The young actors playing the orphans infused the stage with energy, particularly during ensemble numbers like “It’s the Hard Knock Life.” Special mention goes to the talented dog portraying Sandy, whose on-stage presence added an extra layer of charm.
The production’s direction by Jenn Thompson stayed true to the original while incorporating fresh elements that appealed to both longtime fans and newcomers. The set design effectively transported the audience from the bleak orphanage to the grandeur of Warbucks’ mansion, and the choreography was both lively and precise.
