How does an internationally acclaimed acrobatic troop — that has become famous for its death defying stunts and storytelling— innovate their production and keep things fresh?

Simple — they strap on razor sharp blades to their feet and do what they do over one of the most concussion inducing surfaces on the planet. We were wowed. Our hearts raced at the perilous stunts. If you want some of the most oohhhs and aaaahhhhs for your buck, look no further than the Cirque du Soleil Crystal, in Salt Lake City for the Last Bow, Crystal’s Grand Finale Tour at the Maverik Center now through April 13th.

What made the experience incredible was the layers of entertainment added to the stunts and acrobatics.

At the top of my list of surprises there was the masterful interplay of shadow and light. Sometimes when lighting changes are used throughout a production it becomes a distraction. Not in this case. The lighting department played as much a part in this performance as those on the stage. It truly enhanced the experience.

The next layer was the storyline. Our production followed Crystal, an easily distracted young girl, who went ice skating to relieve her stress and to get away from the constant pressures and expectations of others. The ice broke, and Crystal fell into a world that “feels familiar yet strange.”

The skating was nothing short of professional quality, yet they also used shoes that could grip the ice. The great variety of costumes fit the storyline and never left our friends’ children feeling uncomfortable.

I was thoroughly surprised that the music was provided by a quartet of live musicians. The violinist performed throughout the show while the accordion, clarinet, and guitar provided enhancements at key points in the storyline.

Here were the younger audiences’ responses:

College student said, “I was thoroughly entertained by the interaction of ice skating and dancing with acts more traditionally connected with the circus. It was very engaging and I was constantly impressed by the skill and competence of the performers.”

High school senior noted, “There is almost always multiple events going on, often crossing paths, making this all the more dangerous. I would watch it over and over just to see all the detail and sensational stunts!”

The 7th grader raved, “It is an enchanting tale with thrilling, breathtaking, heart-stopping acrobatics”

If this sounds like your idea of entertainment, come early, because as soon as the ice skaters start warming up, they are in character and the experience begins.

CRYSTAL is Cirque du Soleil’s 42nd creation and explores the artistic possibilities of ice for the first time. This unique production pushes boundaries of performance by combining stunning skating and acrobatic feats that defy the imagination. Watch as world-class ice skaters and acrobats take their new frozen playground with speed and fluidity as they challenge the laws
of gravity with never-before-seen acrobatics.

Be sure to pick up tickets for your family to see this unique experience while it’s in town for a limited run.
