Last night, my family and I ventured into the delightfully eerie world of The Addams Family musical at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, and it was an unforgettable experience. This production offers a perfect blend of humor, heart, and a touch of the macabre, making it an excellent introduction to musical theater for families.
The story centers around Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, who has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family—a man her parents have never met. She confides in her father, Gomez, and begs him not to tell her mother, Morticia. Now, Gomez must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife. Everything changes for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
The cast delivers stellar performances, breathing new life into these iconic characters.
- Wednesday Addams: Portrayed with a perfect balance of deadpan humor and teenage angst, Wednesday’s internal struggle between her dark heritage and newfound love is both relatable and entertaining.
- Morticia Addams: Elegantly gothic, Morticia’s presence commands the stage. Her sharp wit and maternal instincts shine, especially as she navigates the chaos unfolding in her household.
- Gomez Addams: Gomez’s charismatic and passionate nature is on full display. His comedic timing and heartfelt moments, particularly in songs like “Happy/Sad,” add depth to his character.
- Uncle Fester: A delightful wildcard, Uncle Fester’s quirky antics and endearing love for the moon provide consistent laughs and a touch of whimsy throughout the show.
The Addams Family musical is an ideal gateway to the world of theater for families. It has a fun and engaging storyline, memorable songs, and dynamic characters which are sure to captivate audiences of all ages. The show’s themes of love, acceptance, and the importance of family resonate universally, making it both entertaining and meaningful.
