Dust off your tartans because we’re ready for a weekend that’s fun for the whole crew as it celebrates heritage and strength. From Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, the Utah Scottish Festival and Highland Games are taking over the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City—bringing big energy, culture, and family-friendly vibes.

Why Your Family Will Love It

  • Highland Athletics – This isn’t just for burly Scots—though the caber tosses and stone throws will absolutely mesmerize the kiddos and grown-ups alike. With events like the famed caber flip, sheaf toss, and hammer throws, every moment is a crowd-stopper. Even the youngest in our crew was wide-eyed and shouting, “Did you see that?!” every time someone hurled a tree-sized log like it was nothing.
  • Bagpipes & Highland Dance – Nothing says Scottish pride like a full squad of pipers in kilts blasting beautiful chaos across the grounds. Saturday’s opening ceremonies and the evening band performances are packed with energy. And when the dancers hit the stage? Grace, rhythm, and serious stamina. It’s like watching a cultural workout—but prettier.
  • Clan Village & Vendor Fair – This is my favorite part to wander. There are tents full of tartan, family names, Scottish history, and more shortbread than your snack-loving heart can handle. The vendor fair has everything from handmade jewelry to sword replicas (don’t worry, not too sharp). And if your kid’s anything like mine, they’ll want to wear a kilt home.
  • Strong Man Competition – Friday night starts strong—literally—with the Strong Man Competition. Big weights, bigger determination, and lots of cheering. It’s a perfect kickoff if you’re heading there after work or school.
  • Royal Court & Ceremony Moments – Between the pageantry of the Royal Court and the emotional “Flowers of the Forest” tribute, you’ll get more than just action—you’ll get connection. These quiet, respectful traditions bring heart and heritage to the forefront in the best way.

A couple of years ago, my nephew took the field in the Highland Games—and we showed up in full family force to support him. There’s something electric about seeing someone you love take on centuries-old events. He tackled the stone throw, the weight toss, and even gave the caber a run for its money.

Watching him dig deep, push hard, and beam with pride at the end was one of those great moments. We all had so much fun cheering him on and watching the other competitors. That whole day made Scottish warriors out of all of us. We’ve been coming back ever since.

This festival has become a tradition. Whether you have Scottish roots or just a love for bagpipes and big energy, there’s something here for everyone. The mix of heritage, family fun, athletic spectacle, and good eats hits that rare sweet spot of “actually fun for all ages.”

We’re heading back again this weekend—family in tow, dressed for dancing, ready to cheer and snack and soak it all in. If you’re looking for something that feels different, meaningful, and seriously fun? This is it.

See you by the caber toss!
