There’s something special about kicking off a new theater season at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The moment you walk into the Buell Theatre, the energy buzzes. You can feel it in the air — that mix of anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of glam that comes with a night out downtown. The lights, the chatter, the pre-show dinner… it’s the kind of night that feels like an occasion. And this time, we were there to see Shucked, the hilariously heart-filled musical that’s bringing a whole lot of fun (and corn) to Denver.

If you haven’t been to the Buell lately, let me just say — there’s really no better place to see live theater in Colorado. From the grand lobby to the sweeping balcony views, everything about the experience feels special. We grabbed dinner nearby, strolled through the complex, and soaked up that classic DCPA vibe — vibrant, welcoming, and always a perfect choice for a date night or special family outing. There’s parking nearby, great restaurants all around, and that buzz that comes with being surrounded by other theater lovers.

Now, let’s talk about Shucked.

This little musical with a big heart started out as an original idea— a quirky, feel-good show about love, community, and (you guessed it) corn. With music by the Grammy-winning country duo Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, Shucked found its groove and eventually made its way to Broadway in 2023, earning a loyal fanbase and even snagging a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor (Alex Newell absolutely stole the show).

And now it’s hit the road on its national tour, with a stop here in Denver now through October 19th, 2025.

Shucked tells the story of a small town that depends entirely on its corn crop — until the corn starts dying. The townsfolk are full of heart and humor, and when they decide to seek help from the outside world, things get delightfully messy. What follows is a laugh-out-loud mix of clever wordplay, toe-tapping songs, and genuine heart. It’s self-aware in the best way — a musical that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still manages to sneak in a message about honesty, connection, and staying true to your roots (pun totally intended).

From the moment the curtain rose, we were laughing. The one-liners are sharp, the cast’s timing is perfect, and the songs are the kind you hum all the way home. It’s family-friendly, fast-paced, and full of the kind of humor that works for both kids and adults. Think a Pixar movie in musical form — clever enough for the grownups, silly enough for the kids (recommended for ages 10 and up), and heartwarming for everyone in between.

Our favorite parts? The hilarious narrators (they keep the story rolling with the best dad jokes ever), the powerhouse vocals, and the fun set design that makes you feel like you’ve stepped right into a golden cornfield at sunset.

If you’re looking for a reason to get out, dress up a little, and laugh until your cheeks hurt, Shucked at the Buell Theatre is it. Whether it’s a date night, a girls’ night out, or a fun family evening, this show will leave you grinning ear to ear.

So grab your tickets and go enjoy live theater right here in Denver. Because nights like this — full of music, laughter, and a little bit of magic — are exactly what we all need more of.

Be sure to check out the great upcoming season at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, there is something for everyone!
