I remember going to see Aladdin in movie theaters decades ago. I was in 6th grade and absolutely loved it. The music, the story, all of it. I’d never seen a Disney movie like that before and it quickly rose to be one of my all time favorites. It’s one that I looked forward to showing to my own children and they, too, found they loved it, as well.
Then this year, I heard that a live-action version had come out and I will admit, I was hesitant to see it. How do you redo that movie? What about the characters? Who on earth could ever attempt to be the genie after Robin Williams? Those are huge shoes to fill! I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters, but I did get to sit down this week* and watch it with my family. I have to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. No, you can’t imitate the original take on Genie, but Will Smith succeeded in completely making it his own character and I really enjoyed his version, as well as the back story on him. The live-action film was incredible, actually. The roles were cast perfectly, the scenery spectacular, the singing was beautiful, and a new modern version of a Disney classic has also risen up to be a favorite.
The movie hit stores everywhere this week and you can pick up both the classic animated version or the new live-action one to share with your own families. You will definitely want to own both and will enjoy watching them over and over again. Be sure to check out all the bonus materials on each movie–it is loaded with tons of treasure you will not want to miss! To learn more, visit Disney online.
