What is left to say about Les Misérables that has not been said before? The book is life-changing. The musical is always a contender in the discussions of greatest of all time. Very few individuals who would read this review don’t already have a favorite moment, song, or memory attached to Les Misérables, even if only from listening to the soundtrack. Some love the inner turmoil in songs like “Who Am I” or “Stars.” Others revel in the bawdy moments like “Lovely Ladies” or with the innkeepers. Personally, “A Little Fall of Rain” gets me every time, only to be surpassed by Fantine’s song at the conclusion. In some circles, changing this musical would be akin to the highest forms of blasphemy.
So, let’s spend our time talking about what you need to know in order to decide who to bring to the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ performance of this classic, and subsequent theaters as they tour the nation. This masterful show employs smooth set changes with each piece of scenery masterfully designed by Matt Kinley and inspired by the paintings of Víctor Hugo. The projections realized by Finn Ross added depth to the stage, with Javert’s final scene possibly the most impressive. Andreane Neofitou and Christine Rowland created stunning visuals through costume design, consulting with Paul Wills. Fantine’s adjustable dress at the factory was impressive and, where we were most intrigued for age appropriateness, the lovely ladies were tastefully costumed.

From the perspective of our 15 year old, “I absolutely loved how each of the performers puts emotion and skill into their role, and even from the prologue, Valjean invites the audience into this emotional story with an astounding range from the aggressive bass notes of his soliloquy in the prologue to the passionate high notes in “Bring Him Home.” And not to only focus on the singing, the acting was phenomenal. As a musician, I was thoroughly impressed by the powerful performance of the pit orchestra, each player extraordinarily talented on their respective instruments.”

What about the dynamics between the characters?
The Bishop of Digne (Randy Jeter) portrayed a startling gentleness.
The Javert-Valjean (Preston Truman Boyd and Nick Cartell respectively) dynamic, developed gradually, showing the roles shifting throughout their repeated encounters, again, drawing the audience into their reality.
Cosette (Addie Morales) kept a youthful aire of energy and hope with her incredible vocals, matched by Marius’ (Gregory Lee Rodriguez) hope and bravery, while Eponine (Christine Heesun Hwang) stood out with determination.
