Blue Man Group Comes To Philadelphia

As a parent with boys, I know that anything makes noise when you hit it. This has long been the premise of the Blue Man Group; what separates them from a three-year-old with pots and pans is more than just the migraine medication required after the toddler finishes his concert.

The Blue Man Group prioritizes audience, engagement, and interaction. The pre-show stage set up was a visual array from floor to ceiling of tv monitors, drums, and props. The rubber chicken and the loop of the video game “pong” were intriguing.

Many in the entertainment industry work to convey the emotions and experiences of their performing art, and so it is easy to see when a group can do it well. The show is far more than drumming on a variety of objects; it is a series of interactive stories shared through physical expression with minimal facial movement. This lends itself to great comedic timing and engagement. The set drummer was the most impressive of the musicians.

Each time I’ve seen the Blue Man Group they bring new innovations and creations to their performance. A personal favorite tonight was a drum-bone, which is merely a trombone style drum. It is as awkward and entertaining as it sounds. Some other highlights of the evening included the lighting accompaniment, the comedy of a VR experience, the live video feed of the audience interactions, as well as behind the stage screen.

When you go to see a Blue Man Group concert, if you are sensitive to loud noises take just a little bit of cotton from a cotton ball and you’ll be just fine. It is well worth the laughs and merriment that comes when those three-year-old drummer boys grow up to do it right.
