Musicals have always had a special place in my heart. I grew up watching them, and I’m pretty sure I knew every word to every song long before I understood half of what was happening on screen. That love never went away.
Living just outside New York City, I’ve been lucky enough to see so many shows up close and personal. Hundreds of them, in fact, over the years. So when I heard there was a museum dedicated to one of my favorite things in the whole world, you better believe I was thrilled to go.

The Museum of Broadway is right in the heart of Manhattan, near all the theaters, and it’s the kind of place you could walk right past if you’re not looking. Times Square is buzzing and crowded just outside, but step inside and it feels like you’ve found a little secret.
The museum walks you through the history of Broadway and how it has changed over the years, with interactive exhibits, set recreations, and a behind-the-scenes look at how a show actually comes to life. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into a production before the curtain goes up, from the writing to the costumes to the stagecraft, this is where you get to find out. It’s self-paced, so you can linger wherever your heart desires.
But my favorite part was getting to see the real thing up close.

Seeing costumes and props from The Phantom of the Opera was a highlight for me. It’s a show that has captivated audiences for years, and being close enough to see the detail and craftsmanship in person was so special. And Mamma Mia!? Pure fun. I’ll admit I may have been humming ABBA under my breath the entire time. We were excited to see Avenue Q, as well, after having just seen the show this summer.

The puppetry from Life of Pi was a surprise favorite. Getting up close to those incredible pieces was absolutely fascinating, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the skill and artistry it takes to bring those creatures to life on stage. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know what I mean. If you haven’t, you’ll want to book a ticket after you see them.

And I was excited to see there was even mention of one of my very favorite plays I have ever seen, The Cripple of Inishmaan.

I walked out with an even deeper respect for everyone behind the curtain, and I came home itching to see my next show. That’s really why I think you should go. Whether you’re a lifelong theater fan or you just want a fun way to spend an afternoon in the city, it’s a great pick for everyone who has an appreciation of the stage. It’s also a wonderful rainy-day escape from the Times Square chaos.
The Museum of Broadway is located at 145 West 45th Street. I’d recommend buying tickets ahead of time, and check the museum’s website for current hours and ticket prices before you go, since those can change. It’s also a perfect way to make a full Broadway day of it: museum in the afternoon, show at night.
So the next time you find yourself in New York City, go see the museum. Just don’t be surprised if you leave humming and with a new show on your must-see list.
