While visiting Barcelona last month, we were invited to check out the most talked about attraction in the city, Basilica de la Sagrada Familia.

This amazing structure stands apart from the rest of the city and is unlike any other church I’ve ever seen in Europe.  Antoni Gaudi was the mastermind behind the design of this Roman Catholic church and it was a true labor of love for him.  His architectural style is so unique and, like we saw at La Pedrera, nature and faith are intertwined  through all the structures.

A devout Catholic, Gaudi dedicated his life to this project. The project began in 1882, but  unfortunately, one day he was hit by a trolley and did not survive, leaving the structure unfinished.  At the time we visited, it was still under construction but now has an anticipated finish date of 2030.  One would wonder why it would take so long to complete such a project–that is until you visit and see the intricate details. Symbolism and religious depictions are imbedded all over the outside and inside.  It is quite breathtaking!

Each side of the cathedral is different, depending on where you are looking, you will see something different.

The same was true inside.  No matter where you were inside, your perspective would be different as the sunlight filtered through the stained glass.  It is truly beautiful to see and I now know for myself why this cathedral is number one on everyone’s sightseeing list when in the incredible city of Barcelona.  You can learn more about it and plan your own visit by visiting their website.

The stained glass windows are jaw dropping! I have never been to Barcelona. My brother was there recently on a business trip but I guess he did not have time to visit the Basilica. I hope to see this in person at least once in my lifetime!
