I remember when Newsies came to movie theatres back in the 1990’s.  Newsies starred the still relatively unknown Christian Bale (whom I  loved!) and I really looked forward to seeing it.  However, when I saw it, it could not hold my interest at all.  I was disappointed and, truthfully, couldn’t even get through the movie.

I’ve been hearing all about the sensation of Newsies on Broadway for a while now. At first, I wasn’t really interested based on my above mentioned opinion of the movie of the same name.  But, I am a Broadway junkie and had to admit, I was intrigued to see it for myself.  Couple that with the amazing team working on the show from Disney, and of course the music by Alan Menken.  My son and I were invited to come and see the show and we decided to give it a chance.

Based on a true story, Newsies! follows a group of young newspaper boys living in 1899 in New York City.  This hard working crew buys papers from The World, a newspaper company owned by tycoon Joseph Pulitzer, to sell to the people of the city. Though they can barely make ends meet, they are grateful for the work. But, when Pulitzer raises the cost of the papers for the Newsies, to make a profit for himself, the boys decide to revolt and create a union to fight for their rights.  They find themselves in a battle much bigger than they ever anticipated, with unlikely allies.

The show is very well done.  I was very impressed with the voices and charisma of the boys, not to mention the choreography of the show.  Constant motion and rhythm keeps your eyes and ears enthralled.  I loved the high energy of the show!  The set was very industrial and intricate,  the perfect backdrop for the musical,

I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the music very much.  I can’t think of a song I didn’t like, but one of my favorites was “King of New York.” The audience of our performance added to the energy and it was evident everyone in the room loved it!  I can’t wait to take the rest of my boys to see it now!

Disney’s Newsies! The Musical is a great show to take children to.  Very clean and fun for everyone.  I am so glad I had the opportunity to see the show, because this would have been a shame to miss it on my opinion of the movie. I highly recommend getting tickets to this show while it is still in New York City.
