One of my very favorite movies, Christmas or otherwise, is Love, Actually. I had no idea there was such a cult following for the movie, certainly not enough to necessitate a musical parody on the stage of a New York City theatre. But, you’d better believe, as soon as I heard there was, I had to go see it for myself!
Now playing for a limited engagement at the Jerry Orbach theatre near 50th and Broadway, this quick-witted and light-hearted show is a must see for fans of the movie, and even non-fans, actually. Anyone who has seen the show and has a strong feeling for it either way will easily get a high value of entertainment from the 90 minute interpretation of the many storylines that are found in Love, Actually with a bit of a humorous reality.
A small but mighty talented group of actors make up the cast and each member has the unique ability to portray multiple characters seamlessly in this hilarious adaption of the greatest Christmas movie ever. The theatre is intimate, setting the stage for a Rom-Com of the highest caliber. Each story line was portrayed perfectly, my favorite easily being any seen with Kiera Knightley in it. Kayla Catan nailed that character perfectly! Daniel Hayward played a great Billy Mac, but even better Snape….I mean Alan Rickman. This Harry Potter fanatic got a big kick out of his portrayal. And Laura Linney (Joyah Spangler)? What’s she doing in this show? She was blowing the audience away with an incredible singing voice, for sure!
Each cast member put their individual stamp on the show that was to me, perfect just as they were.
