A Little Taste of Brooklyn in Mystic

While staying at Foxwoods Resort Casino last week, we were invited* to dine at Junior’s, one of the onsite restaurants.  Since we were with our whole family, we were excited to see that this restaurant was family-friendly.

Junior's

Junior’s is of course famous for their cheesecake, of which I have had a few times after favorite Broadway shows in New York City.  But, I have never eaten a real meal there!

Junior’s hails from Brooklyn, New York and you are sure to find specialities from that borough on the menu.  I was excited to see what was in store for us at dinner.

We were greeted immediately by a helpful and friendly server, who proceeded to take our drink orders and bring us some unusual starters:  pickled beets, homemade pickles, and a vinegar-based coleslaw.  This is a fun change of pace from bread!  All of these items were really good and reminded me of being in a New York deli.

We then selected our meals from a huge menu.  There is literally something here for everyone!  Salads, burgers, huge stacked corned beef sandwiches, pasta, and even lobster (we were in New England).  In fact, I was surprised to see just how many delicious looking lobster specials they had for the summer season.  I opted for one of the specials: chicken pot pie.  I’m a sucker for a good chicken pot pie and after hearing high recommendations from our waiter, I definitely wanted to give it a try.  I wanted to try something new, though, too, and another one of their specialties was called “Something Different,” which my husband tried.  I was excited to see what it was!

The kids, of course could order their favorites off of the kids menu, of which there was a good number of choices (yay!).

It didn’t take long for our food to arrive.

Something Different

Junior’s started out as a Kosher restaurant in Brooklyn, serving lots of favorite Jewish staples.  This is where the idea of the “Something Different” plate came from.  Tender beef brisket sandwiched between two flavorful potato pancakes and served with sweet and chunky applesauce and au jus.  Wow!  This meal was so good! (So good, in fact, I had to steal some for myself).

My chicken pot pie was exactly what I had hoped for.  Rich, creamy with a balanced blend of chicken and vegetables, cooked to a tender perfection, and topped with a flaky buttery crust.  My only complaint?  It’s not much of one, really.  It was just so much more than I could eat.  But more than enough for another meal to take home.

The kids were served very large portions of their favorite chicken tenders, which they claimed were amazing, served with steak fries and honey mustard.

The portions were very generous and all of the food we tried was really, truly delicious.  We were stuffed.  But how can you go to a restaurant famous for it’s desserts and not try one?  Well, sometimes you just can’t!  We gave in a shared a couple.  They cheesecake and carrot cake were so good!

Our experience at Junior’s at Foxwoods was wonderful. The restaurant was clean, bright, and roomy. The service was very attentive and consistent.  It was a great spot to dine with the entire family and everyone walked away (very) full and content.  If you are going to go out to dinner with the whole family while vacationing in Mystic, we highly recommend Junior’s to you!
